Embracing Duality: Finding Balance in Opposing Thoughts and Emotions

Updated: Jul 4, 2023

In our complex and dynamic lives, we often find ourselves grappling with various thoughts and emotions that seem to contradict each other. We may experience self-doubt while still possessing self-confidence, or we may feel torn between different desires and expectations.

Duality is the concept of holding two opposing ideas, emotions, or desires simultaneously.

I want to share with you the power of embracing duality and how it helps you navigate through challenges, make decisions, and cultivate personal growth.

Embracing Duality in Everyday Life:

Every day, you may face lots of diverse situations at work, at home, and in your personal life. It's normal to have a multitude of thoughts and ideas about your goals, relationships, and the amount of time you have available. Sometimes, we feel like there's not enough time and doubt ourselves, which can make it hard to achieve what we want and feel confident. But if we recognize and accept that there are different sides to things, it can help us see things in a new and positive way..

Navigating Confusion and Decision-Making:

Confusion usually shows up when you're standing at the cross-road, faced with decisions to be made, while considering multiple options. Our minds tend to present us with thoughts that undermine our choices, such as "That won't work," "You can't do that," or "What if you fail?" These are the thoughts that automatically come up because your brain is designed to always search out danger and what could go wrong, so it will want to offer you negative thoughts first. Just to keep you safe. Nothing has gone wrong. However, embracing duality allows you to recognize that you can have both. You will sometimes have doubts, especially when trying new things, you're supposed to and you also possess the courage and potential for achieving. By giving Equal Air-Time, to opposing negative thoughts you can approach decision-making with a more balanced and open mindset.

Embracing New Beginnings:

you and your life is an ever-evolving journey, always offering you new opportunities to explore new interests, passions, and paths. It's not uncommon to re-evaluate different areas of your life at different times, people do it all the time. They consider leaving their corporate careers to start a new business, embark on new relationships, end old ones, relocate or venture into unexplored territories in their 40s, 50s, or even 60s. These shifts in life can bring on conflicting emotions, combining excitement and fear, anticipation and doubt.

"Having the presence of self-doubt does not imply the absence of self-confidence."

Embracing duality lets you see that it's not one OR the other.... It's BOTH. Not good OR bad - It's good AND bad. It's knowing that stepping into the unknown can be both exhilarating and intimidating. You can feel love and frustration at the same time within a relationship and that it's not only okay, it's normal and expected to experience conflicting emotions during such transformative moments.

Cultivating Personal Growth:

When you open yourself up to Duality when making decisions, you unlock the potential for personal growth and self-discovery. The coexistence of opposing thoughts and emotions allows you to acknowledge your strengths and areas where that may need improvement. It encourages you to embrace vulnerability and accept the growth that comes from stepping outside your comfort zones. Through self-reflection and introspection, you learn so much about yourself.

Life comes with conflicting ideas and emotions, it's a part of your daily existence. The concept of duality offers a powerful lens through which you can view and navigate your life. When you recognize that it's possible to hold two opposing thoughts or emotions at the same time, you gain a deeper understanding of yourself and the complexities of your human experience. Embracing duality allows you to make informed decisions, overcome self-doubt, and embark on new journeys with courage and confidence. So, the next time you find yourself torn between conflicting ideas, remember that within duality lies the potential for growth, resilience, and a greater understanding of your true self.
